The wildlife of Kruger and beaches of Mozambique combine to make the perfect southern African self-drive holiday. Start in Limpopo province surrounded by the indigenous forests and fruit orchards of Tzaneen before exploring the South African side of Kruger National Park in search of the ‘Big 5.’ Cross the border into Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park for a night overlooking the Massingir Dam before heading to Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast for 5 days with white sand beaches and swaying palm trees as your back drop. Enjoy snorkelling, diving, swimming, great food and amazing vibes as you relax and ‘go with the flow.’ Your final Mozambican stop is its capital, Maputo, an exciting blend of African culture and colonial architecture.

Arrive OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and pick up your hire car. Depending on your time of arrival do an optional tour exploring Johannesburg or Soweto, stock up on food and essentials for your trip or enjoy the solitude of your accommodation and get a good nights sleep.

Travel distance: Approximately 220kms, winding roads.

One of the finest nature reserves in Africa, the Kruger is a vast wilderness of thorn trees, prolific game and sub-tropical heat. It is home not only to The Big Seven - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, cheetah and wild dog, but also to an abundance of smaller, equally fascinating animals and birdlife. The size of Wales or Israel this amazing wildlife paradise contains a vast array of habitats that attract different animals and birdlife in different seasons. Your time in Kruger is spent on early morning and afternoon game drives, choosing your route based on what has been seen in the area. Alternatively park yourself at one of the many waterholes and see what comes along … huge herds of elephant or buffalo needing an afternoon drink or mud bath, or if you are lucky a pride of lions needing water after devouring a kill!

Travel distance: Approximately 130kms, dirt, national park roads.

You need to ensure an early departure as the Giriyondo Border Post into the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park closes at 3pm. Now you are in Mozambique! Drive steadily through the park, keeping an eye out for the wildlife that inhabits the Mozambique side of this huge game reserve, before crossing the Massingir Dam wall and continuing to your lodge overlooking the vast Massingir Dam.

Today you will drive through rural Mozambique with Chokwe being the first town where you can get fuel. Along the way you pass through the towns of Macia and Xai-Xai. For the next two nights you are staying at the Naara Eco Lodge, a luxury lodge located behind the sand dunes of the Indian Ocean. Built on the banks of Nhambavale Lake in Chidenquele, overlooking untouched dune forests, Naara consists of 10 deluxe safari tents nestled in 2 hectares of indigenous African bush.

Pass the towns of Quissico, Inharrime and Lindela on the way to Inhambane - set in one of the most picturesque areas in Mozambique with spectacular views of pristine beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. During your stay at Baia Sonambula Guesthouse, Tofo Beach or Sentidos Beach Resort, Barra Beach, there there are numerous activities to enjoy including snorkelling, swimming, ocean safaris, catamaran cruises and diving. The market in Inhambane has fresh seafood, and handmade clothing and accessories. Dine at your choice of beach-side restaurants and enjoy the Mozambican fare.
